Description:
Capsule endoscopy is a valuable but underutilized tool for the evaluation of small bowel obscure bleeding and small bowel Crohn's Disease. By implementing capsule technology, we can diagnose and create a therapeutic plan in a timely manner for obscure bleeding, as well as adjust treatment regimens for inflammatory bowel disease and treat to target. Objectives:

To define the indications and contraindications of capsule endoscopy

To better understand the benefit of its use in the management of small bowel Crohn's Disease.

To discuss patient selection ideal for ingestion versus endoscopic placement of capsule endoscope

To review the prep and process of pill ingestion and the patient experience.

To discuss potential complications and appropriate management.
Faculty Bios
Dr. Hass joined Gastroenterology Center of Connecticut in 2007 and served for the past nine years as Medical Director for the Endoscopy Center of Connecticut. He most recently was named to the position of Director of Endoscopy at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Saint Raphael Campus. In addition, he is very active in physician advocacy work both regionally and nationally, having served as president of the New Haven County Medical Association and is currently serving on the Connecticut State Medical Society State Council. His special interests include disorders of the small bowel, liver and biliary tract disease, disorders of the pancreas, and inflammatory bowel disease. He has published in several peer-reviewed journals and lectured both nationally and internationally

Nancy Murphy has practiced as a Nurse Practitioner in gastroenterology at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA for 18 years.Her clinical expertise includes a wide range of GI disorders focusing on the luminal GI tract including GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis, motility, anemia, clostridium difficile. She is the lead AP and trains new hires and fellows on capsule endoscopy.
